“If you don’t know where you are going, how will you know when you arrive?”
Why is it so hard for you to know what's best for yourself?
Why don't you wake up in the morning and know exactly what it is that you will be the most succesful at, and will fulfill you the most.
I mean, after all — you know yourself best right?
If you feel this way, don't worry - you can stop beating yourself up over not knowing. It's all too common.
There is an answer too. And it’s not what you’re thinking.
But you must have an urgency in having a vision for your life. Without it, it is all too easy to become disoriented, lost, and unwilling to step into your potential.
This leads to a life of misery.
So, here’s how to find your vision.
You Need a Focused, Guiding Vision For Your Life.
90% of people don’t have a clear, calculated, and powerful mission pushing them forward in life.
If you haven’t taken the time to develop a clear vision for what you want your life to be and who you want to become in the process of living it, you will end up becoming whatever your environment decides you should become.
But, trust me, I get it.
How can we, as these infinitely complex individuals, ever try to shove ourselves into a label of ‘one thing’?
It just doesn’t seem to fit. And it’s okay if it doesn’t fit.
But there is a tight balancing act here.
You may not fit easily into a neatly trimmed box. But, having some clearly defined edges around you will make you much more focused, capable, and efficient.
That’s where things can get tricky.
Why is it so hard for us to know what is best for ourselves?
Here’s why:
It’s always easier for us to decide what we don’t like over what we do like.
We are negatively-biased creatures.
Things we don’t like stick out to us: a thorn in your shoe. Whereas things we do like: those brand new comfortable shoes, very quickly become numb to our senses. After a few days we forget they are even there.
So here’s the roadmap:
If you struggle with finding a Vision for your life:
What you want to do.
Where you want to live.
Who you want to be.Start with finding the Anti-Vision for your life:
What you DON’T want to do.
Where you DON’T want to live.
Who you DON’T want to be.
This will always provide more answers.
Start with what you know for sure you don’t want, and take those things off the table.
Once you start defining the boundaries of what you know you don’t want, the picture of what you do want will start becoming a little more clear.
For example: I know that I don’t want to work a job that turns into a routine. ‘Check in at 8am, do more or less the same tasks all day, check out at 4pm.’
This is soul suicide for me. I may not know exactly what it is I do want, but this helps me create clear boundaries and get one step closer to whatever that is. Just make sure you don’t let your subconscious turn you in the wrong direction.
So, start now.
- Grab some paper.
- Make a few categories (Work, Relationships, Family, Spirit, etc)
- Write out the Anti-Vision for each category (Things you KNOW you don’t want)
- Refine over time. Your Vision will become more clear.
Watch as you suddenly gain new perspective and motivation to turn this one life into something you are proud to live.
Until next time.
See you on the path,
Evan.
